TOP 10!!

Top 10
Thing you should have with you are at a Convention!
1.    Ticket, Pass or Badge
This is one of the most important things! You will not be able to enter the convention without this. Also a helpful tip, if you are going back for another day, tie your badge to your keys or your backpack, that way you will not forget it the next day!

2.    Cash! Do not bring a Credit Card
Please bring cash and leave your Credit cards at home! Only bring what you are willing to spend. I suggest breaking up your cash into 2 different categories 1) Food 2) Shopping/autographs. If possible keep them separated so you are not temped to use your food money for something you want to buy, because then you won’t have any money for food.
3.    ID
I pretty you know why you would need your Id, but having this will help you for getting your tickets and such.
4.    Cell Phone
Having a way to contact your friend or the group you are in is helpful!  I would suggest texting if possible as when you try calling someone either they will never hear the ring or its too loud that you can’t even here the person you are trying to call.
5.    Black and Sliver Sharpies for autographs
You will never know if the person who you are getting an autograph will have the correct sharpie or their sharpie ran out of ink.

6.    Thing you want to get autograph
These are items like action figures or photos. Most guests will have pre-printed Photos at the table that you can use to get autographs. You never know what photos they will have so, be prepared!
7.    Bottle of water if allowed.
Water is something I never thought of bring when I first going to Cons, but I shortly realize that it will be life saver when you are stuck in line for an autograph and have no means of getting a drink.

8.    Backpack or a canvas bag
Carrying all of those awesome toys and t-shirt that you are buying, will get heavy so will need something much easier to carry those awesome items. Yes, most venders will give you a plastic bag but that can start to hurt your hands. Putting all of those new treasures in a bag or backpack will save your hands!
9.    Camera
Of course you want to take pictures of all of those Amazing talented cosplayers and the stars! I know you want to remember all of those great memories from the cons! Or show your non-geeky friend that there are others out there just like you.

10.          Extra Batteries
You don’t want to be taking an awesome photo of let say Sir Patrick Stewart and you batteries die! That would awful thing!  Bring at least one extra set of batteries plus a few extra for that just in case scenario!

Get Your Geek On! *Special Announcement Inside*

If you can tell the difference between a Gremlin, an Ewok and a Tribble, you're well on your way to the tippy top of the geek pyramid. However, it never hurts to learn a few key facts every good Sci-fi geek should know:

  • 42 is the Answer to Everything: Douglas Adams's novel The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a staple for every geek's bookshelf (and DVD or BluRay collection). In the novel, the computer Deep Thought was created by pan-dimensional [existing across many or all dimensions] beings to calculate the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything - the answer eventually being revealed to be 42.
  • Do or Do Not; There Is No Try: Yoda is one of the most-recognized characters in Sci-fi. Voiced by voice actor and puppeteer Frank Oz, the Jedi Master made his first appearance in Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back on the swampy surface of Dagobah, reluctantly instructing Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force.
  • Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold: Khan Noonien Singh, as portrayed by the late Ricardo Montalban, made his first appearance in the Star Trek original series episode "Space Seed" (S. 1 E. 22, 1967) and later cemented his legacy as a villain in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Khan had a distinct obsession with the Herman Melville novel Moby-Dick, to the point that his dying words are a reiteration of Captain Ahab's final tirade.
  • It's Just a Flesh Wound: The 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail is another staple for the DVD or BluRay collection. Starring Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, John Cleese, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, this Monty Python parody of the tale of King Arthur's search for the bravest knights of the realm has humored generation after generation of geeks with its silly antics and cheeky dialogue.
  • We Gotta Go to the Crappy Town Where I'm a Hero: In 2002, a little show premiered on Fox called Firefly. The Sci-fi/Western mash-up brainchild of Joss Whedon experienced a short run of only 11 aired episodes before it was cancelled, but the series found a new life thanks to the fervent determination of the fans and the movie Serenity was released in 2005. If nothing else, the Firefly crew and their loyal fan-base have proven one very important thing to the executives at Fox: you can't stop the signal.
  • So Say We All: Battlestar Galactica, the futuristic story of humans searching for mythological Earth, first premiered in 1978 on ABC, but was cancelled after 22 episodes in 1979. The series was revived in 2004 thanks to Syfy and ran through 2009, airing 75 episodes and mixing up plots with gender changes: Starbuck, for example, was originally played by Dirk Bennedict, but is portrayed by Katee Sackhoff in the reboot. Another big change: the newer Cylons look like people instead of robotic toasters.
  • Soylent Green is People: In 1973, the late Charlton Heston appeared in the Sci-fi/Mystery film Soylent Green. Set in a very dark and overcrowded futuristic New York, Heston's character Detective Thorn finds himself in a dangerous position against the government when he discovers the new processed food being sold to everyone is indeed made of human corpses. Bon appétit !
  • Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey...Stuff: Possibly one of the biggest successes in the genre of Sci-fi, the ever-popular BBC show Doctor Who has been going strong since the very first episode premiered in 1963 with William Hartnell portraying the eccentric time-traveler. Since then there have been ten other actors to take up the role, meaning in total there have been 11 different incarnations of the Doctor, with Matt Smith being the current Doctor: the original show was cancelled in 1989 - Doctors one through seven appeared at this time - after which a TV movie was released in 1996 starring the eighth Doctor. The show was picked up again in 2005 with Doctor nine and is currently in its seventh season with Doctor number 11. The Doctor's constants: his TARDIS and sonic screwdriver.

Geeky Links!

Hello all fellow Geeks,

I’ve been pondering on what my next Blog post would be.  I wanted to be something fun! So I figure I’ll share some of my favorite links.

www.startrek.com – Of course I would love this site, I use to check it daily but since I have them on my Facebook, I rarely go the website. They still have some great info about upcoming events and such.
www.Trekradio.net  - I came across them just  little over a year ago, one of their Dj @Deyvid_KDF started following me so I follow back  found out he was djing and ever since then fell in love with Trek Radio. So much that I might be on Trek Radio staff. Check them out my favorite show is @radiorisa show on Monday 11pm CST and Fridays 1pm CST.
www.thinkgeek.com – This site can be very dangerous if you have some money. It has all kinds of geeky items to buy. I have gotten Star Trek cookie cutters, TARDIS disappearing mug, TARDIS cookie jar and a Star trek beach towel!
www.scifiexpo.com – These guys put out three Conventions out a year. The  have Sci-Fi EXPO  which the smallest con they do, then there is  Dallas Comic Con which is the biggest one and last there is Fan days  which I guess  medium size con.
www.cosmic-city.com – Capt Shinypants already mention these guys! They have the best Shirt, not much to say about this because they’re that awesome!
www.trekmovie.com – If you want to know what’s going on , these are the people you need see, they always seem to have the best info and articles around.
https://www.facebook.com/The.Doctor.Who.Tardis - Greg post some awesome Doctor Who stuff, everything from handmade crafts to jokes only Whovians would get. He doesn’t have website but this is his Facebook page.

These are so of the site that I tend to visit or keep an eye on.

Molecules are sexy

What is up, guys and dolls? This is your Captain speaking.

As of yesterday, I began plotting how I can possibly crash into Space City Con this coming August. I will most definitely be attending Trek Expo in June though, but the ever so cunning John DeLancie (TNG's Q, MLP's Discord) is going to be at Space City and I must meet the almighty DeLancie (he has magical powers IRL, ya know - just ask Garrett Wang). Speaking of Garrett Wang, if you've never heard of Cosmic City Tees, you should totally get your geeky butt over there and look at their stuff. Garrett went in with a couple of guys from Tulsa, OK a couple of years ago and created this totally amazing company that creates original geeky tees - including the exclusive Power of DeLancie tee! (< See what I did there? Heh.)

Dalek Chick and I officially met at 2012 Trek Expo, though we met on Facebook previously just after the 2011 Expo through various picture tags and just all-out awesomeness. Trek Expo is a smaller convention comparatively, but that's what makes it so fun; it's a very close-knit and intimate group of people and in the three years I've attended so far, I've made a ton of new amazing friends. Last year at the Supper with the Stars, I got to sit at a table with Michael Hogan (BSG's Col. Tigh) and he and Kate Vernon (BSG's Mrs. Tigh) decided to cheat on the trivia game we played when they couldn't remember the answer to a BSG-themed question and called director Michael Rymer, and when he didn't answer, they opted to call Edward James Olmos (BSG's Commander Adama) instead. After dinner, Dalek Chick and I hung out in the hotel's bar with the Cosmic City guys and a few other friends. It was truly a blast and I look forward to creating more fun memories this year.

All last night and part of this morning I came up with a rough draft of a logo for the blog! Please, no judging; it's just the first draft.

Soon, I'll be working on a revision and making it look more awesome. Monday I've got to make a supply run (of the crafty sort), so hopefully soon after that, I should have a second draft to show off.

Till then, stay shiny and solemnly swear to be up to no good.

just another day at the job

Hello All!

This happened a couple of days ago.
I work at retail store that mainly specialize in clothing.  Today I was the main cashier and it was normal slow morning.  Anyways, I was checking out a customer when I notice they had pick out one of our Trekkies shirt. I told them I was a huge Trekkie and bought many of those shirts already. I found out she wasn’t the fan it was her grandson who was with her at the counter. I started to tell her about the upcoming convention in February and about my Sci-fi Club I am a part of.  She writing all this down and told me her son who was in the air force was the one who really loves Star Trek and Doctor who.  This lady seems so happy to know there was more around here.  She very nice and it was great to tell her about my geekiness!

Stay geeky!

Introductions and such: Capt. Shinypants

Welcome to my shiny little corner of the Internet! You are in for a treat; between Dalek Chick and myself, you are going to have your face geeked right off of your pretty little heads. So now, on to the introducing bit:

I am Capt. Shinypants. If your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you...or something like that. I have a little ship that ain't pretty, but she's a keeper. There's no power in the 'verse that can keep me from geeking out over awesomeness: Firefly, Star Trek, Pirates, sometimes Star Wars, a tad bit of Doctor Who...to name a few. I'm all for making things! Creativity is the best gift everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, is born with, so use it as often as you can. Music is AWESOME and I listen to lots of different kinds (not rap...except DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince).

I hate these intro things, I can never think of anything particularly helpful, so if you have questions not answered, ask away in a comment!

Stay shiny!
