Summer Blockbusters

It's about that time of year again, and I've seen quite a few trailers for upcoming films that we should all be looking forward to. If you're needing a list of amazing movies to see this summer, IMDb has a list of upcoming releases you can look at. These are some of the films I'm particularly looking forward to seeing:

May 3: Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr. returns as "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist" Tony Stark in the third installment of Iron Man. Stark's world comes crashing down at the hands of a new foe, the Mandarin [Sir Ben Kingsley], and he embarks on a mission to hunt down the Mandarin and put a stop to the destruction raining down around him and save the "one thing he can't live without": Pepper Potts [Gwyneth Paltrow].

May 17: Star Trek: Into Darkness

The second Trek film from director J.J. Abrams is now less than a month away and Trekkies/Trekkers across the globe are fidgeting in anticipation. After Alice Eve was revealed to be Dr. Carol Marcus, all of the speculation of "who's that" centered solely upon Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison. Rumors have run the gamut between  his being Khan to his being a Section 31 operative (in one trailer, it's mentioned that he's a rogue agent, but doesn't distinctly mention from where).

May 31: After Earth / Now You See Me

Starring Will and Jaden Smith, this post-apocalyptic flick is set 1,000 years after humanity has been forced to abandon Earth. After crash landing, the father-son duo must find a way to signal for help and to survive until they can be rescued.

Jesse Eisenberg teams up with fellow Zombieland survivor Woody Harrelson, along with Isla Fisher and Dave Franco, to pull off one of the greatest heists the world has seen using magic tricks and cunning to keep the FBI rethinking everything they think they know.

June 7: Much Ado About Nothing

Joss Whedon puts his own spin on the classic Shakespearean comedy (the movie is even filmed in Whedon's own home in Santa Monica). And, of course, no Whedon project is complete without a cast comprised of people from his past projects: Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Sean Maher, to name a few. Lately, anything Whedon has touched has turned into box office gold, and this should be no exception.

June 21: World War Z

Based on the novel by Max Brooks, humanity finds itself in a race against the clock to stop the zombie pandemic before all hope is completely wiped out. I highly recommend reading before watching because I know a lot of details will be changed/left out due to time constraints and creative license.

July 26: The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan once more in this sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand [per director James Mangold]. Based on the comic book series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, Logan travels to modern-day Japan and battles an old foe while struggling with his own deep inner battles.

August 16: Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass and Hit Girl return for another round against the bad guys, most notably The Mother F-er [keeping it as family-friendly as possible here], formerly the Red Mist, and his band of baddies. Also joining the ranks of heroes: Jim Carrey as Col. Stars and Stripes.

Honorable Mention - August 23: The World's End

This Simon Pegg-Nick Frost team-up doesn't currently have a trailer out, though Pegg has been hinting at one coming soon via Twitter. Brief synopsis from IMDb: "Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival."

Other Pegg-Frost flicks to see if you haven't already: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Paul.

This Thursday April 25th Fathom Events will be playing TNG Best of Both World in over 550 cities! Did I mention it will be on the big screen?   This is to help promote the blu-ray release of TNG season 3, while they play the episode during breaks they will talk how they re-master it and how thing were made.

Larry Nemecek is doing a ticket give away.  All you have to is come to his website  found out how to enter and  answer this question , In "The Best of Both Worlds" (parts 1 and/or 2), what is the character name of the actor/actress who also played a senior member of the crew of the original Battlestar Galactica?  Now the kicker is he’s only giving the winner that live in within these areas: Phoenix, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Cleveland or Boston.

So now you are saying “but I don’t leave near one those places and still can’t make to the showing” Well Trek Radio has you cover! Some other djs and I will be live tweeting before and after the showing.  Also will be conduction some fan interviews and more. So please follow Trek Radio on twitter. Oppa Klingon Style!

In school, I’m sure a lot of you took some other foreign language, like Spanish, French, or German (personally, I took Spanish and German). Sometimes other languages are easy to pick up, other times it seems everything goes in one ear and out the other. Back on March 28th, Dalek Chick and I had the pleasure of being guests on Warrior’s Den with DJ DeyvID on Trek Radio to learn some Klingon. You can laugh if you want (we did), but it was really a lot of fun. In today’s post, I’m going to share a few of the phrases we learned and maybe, just maybe, you’ll have some new phrases you’ll be running around shouting at people.

Of course, no Klingon lesson would be complete without learning the proverb “revenge is a dish best served cold”, so we’ll start there:

bortaS bIr jablu’DI’ reH QaQqu’ nay’

At this point, it probably looks like a bunch of gibberish, but that’s okay. Here’s how to pronounce it:

bortaS - bore-tash
bIr - beer
jablu’DI’ - job-loo-dee
reH - reh (that’s a hard h, almost like in German when you say “acht”)
QaQqu’ – khah-khkoo (big Q pronounced like the big H in reH, but with a k sound in front of it)
nay’ – nye (like Bill Nye)

The apostrophes are called glottal stops, and the way DevID described how they work is kind of like the hyphen in uh-oh; it’s that small catch in the throat, so when you see that apostrophe you’ll end the sound abruptly instead of holding it out. It’ll take some practice, but you’ll get it.

Here’s a fun one DeyvID suggested screaming out at conventions to see who might understand what it means:

'IwlIj jachjaj

That means “may your blood scream”. Sounds fun, huh? Alright, here’s how you pronounce that:

‘IwlIj – eww-lidj
jachjaj – jahch-jahj (ch is always pronounced like church)

This next one is a bit more on the inspirational side:

qo’mey poSmoH Hol

That means “language opens doors”. See? Even Klingons can be inspirational.
Pronunciation:

qo’mey – koh-may
poSmoH – posh-moh (there’s that hard H again at the end)
Hol – hole (leads with the hard H, and for the O you need to kind of form your mouth into a dome)

Don't worry if you can't get it just yet; it's going to take a lot of practice. And phlegm. Lots and lots of phlegm. If you need some more help with pronunciation, I suggest taking a look at KLI's site.

Here are some more phrases we learned as well as their meaning, but I challenge you to figure out the pronunciation and let me know how it goes in the comments (you don't need an account to comment):

nIteb Qob qaD jup ‘e’ chaw’be’ SuvwI [A warrior does not let a friend face danger alone.]

Hoch ‘ebmey tIjon [Capture all opportunities.]

ghIj qet jaghmeyjaj [May your enemies run in fear.]

reH ‘uQvam vlqawtaH [I will remember this dinner forever.]

not mev peghmey [Secrets never cease.]

How to make Hair bows / Bow Ties

Fellow Geeks!,

I recently made  some nerdy hair bows/Bow Ties  mainly for Star Trek Day! Many people have ask if I would sell them or how did I make them. Well, today is your lucky day,I will be showing you step by step on how to make them!

First Items you will need

  • 1/4 or scrap Fabric
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ruler
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Twist ties or ribbon
  • Hair tie or a clip

First step is to pick the best pattern for the bow, if isn't one pattern don't worried. You will cut out a piece that 12x5 and also a 1 1/2 x 6.  The first piece is your bow and the second piece is what will be the middle piece of your bow.

Once you have your two pieces cut, you will flip it over so the backside of the fabric is facing up. Now you will fold over about 1/4th if inch  to make a "fake seam" That you will iron down, this way the edges will not fray.

After you have iron down the sides you will fold one side to the middle point of the fabric  and then fold the other side just a little over the first fold. Then Iron all that together.

Set the piece to side so it can cool off, take the smaller piece of fabric that  you cut early and   fold over the side like you did early  and iron that down.

Now here come the trick part, to make it easier on you, take the bigger piece of fabric what we were working on early and fold it like a fan.  hold the middle of it and  fan out the edges.

Once you make you bow the you like it, take a piece of string or twist tie and tie it to the middle, basically  to hold it all together,

We are down to the final steps, take the other piece of fabric and wrapped it around the middle piece and glue it to it down, you can trim your piece down it make smooth.

Final step, glue on the hair slip or hair tie  to the back of your bow!

I hope all your fellow nerds out there enjoy  this!

I want to let everyone know this Tuesday at 6pm Est (5pm Cst)  on Trek Radio  Deyvid  will be playing highlights from Capt Shinypants and I  learning some Klingon., so please tune in!  If you have any question on how to make these bows please just email us!

Stay geeky
