April 5th: Let's Make It So!

Every Trekkie and Trekker knows what April 5, 2063 symbolizes: it is a fundamental cornerstone of the Star Trek universe otherwise known as First Contact Day. This year in 2013, it will be EXACTLY 50 years from the date that Zefram Cochrane had his first successful Warp flight, and subsequently his first visit from an alien race known as the Vulcans. In partnership with Trek Radio, we would like to know what YOUR plans are for April 5^th: you can tweet at @Geeky_Adventure and/or @TrekRadio with the hashtags #StarTrekDay. So hoist your geeky colours high!

Here are a few ideas if you’re unsure of what you can do to celebrate:

• ·         Have a movie/TV show marathon, either by yourself or with your friends.
• ·         If you’re a part of a fleet group, hold a charity event dressed in uniform.
• ·         Throw a Trek-themed bash, complete with Bloodwine and Romulan Ale.
• ·         Play Star Trek Online: it’s free!
• ·         Read (or re-read) Star Trek novels. 
• ·         Gather your friends together at a local park and re-enact your favorite Trek scenes.

Don’t forget to share your celebrations with us and Trek Radio, and don’t forget one of the many Golden Rules of the Internet: pics or it didn’t happen.

Cosplay Tips and Tricks 2

Hello Fellow Geeks!

As you read this I will be down at College station going to Aggie Con!  

                This week’s   blog will be tied in to my last post, about Cosplaying. Last time I gave you tips and tricks on how to start and create your cosplay.  Now that you are to the point of  wearing your cosplay to a event or a convention, well I will give you some great tips and tricks about that.

1.        Bring safety pins, Duct tape, and a small sewing kit.

You will never know when a seam will pop or rip on you. I have saved many other people from this because I carry these items with me. I also have a repair kit in the car or in the hotel room just in case of an emergency.

2.       Be aware of how much space you take up with your cosplay.

Having wings or something that extends your body can cause trouble, I suggested not using wings or anything like so when you at a busy Con.  Poking someone in the eye isn’t nice or even hitting someone in the face with your wings isn’t nice either!

3.       Head items

If you are wearing something that is on your head please take it off when you are sitting in the Q and A rooms.  You tend to block the person behind you views of the stage or the screen. When I wear my Dalek Headband I always take it off so It not blink and getting into people views. 

4.       Handlers

It wise to have a friend or someone with you when you are wearing a cosplay, As they can hold or watch your stuff when you take photos or even help you in the restroom or just sitting down.  Having that

Drink Up, Me Hearties!

It's no secret that pirates like their booze. However, it might be a little less-known that us geeks like to have a roaring good time now and then, and for that I've collected a few fun drink recipes for your next geeky shindig:

Sonic Screwdriver:

70% Sobe orange energy drink

20% vodka (orange or banana flavored optional)

10% 99 Bananas (99 proof banana schnapps)

Directions: combine ingredients and prepare to blast off in the TARDIS. Warning: DON'T BLINK!

Sereni-tea:

1 oz Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka

3/4 oz Captain Morgan’s Original Spiced Rum

3/4 oz silver tequila

3/4 oz gin

1 oz sour mix

Sweet Tea

Coca-cola

Lemon

Directions: Shake all ingredients, except for the sweet tea and cola, with ice and pour in a highball glass. Top off with an even mix of cola and sweet tea and garnish with a lemon wedge. Toast the Independents in an Alliance-friendly bar on U-Day and be a big damn hero.

Borg Queen:

1 oz Smirnoff Green Apple Twist Vodka

1 oz Dekuyper Apple Pucker Apple Schnapps

1 oz 99 Apples Apple Schnapps

Splash Sweet & Sour Mix

Directions: In a shaker cup, combine all ingredients with ice. Shake gently, then strain into a chilled Martini glass. For garnish, you can add apple-flavored sugar to the rim of the glass. Assimilation is inevitable, resistance is futile.

Millennium Falcon:

1 shot cinnamon schnapps

1 shot rum

1 shot Jagermeister

Directions:  Pour a shot of each into a glass and punch it.

Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster:

1 oz Jack Daniel's Tennessee whiskey

1 oz peach schnapps

4 - 6 oz orange juice

1 splash Blue Curacao liqueur

Directions: Shake the orange juice, the Jack and the peach schnapps in a shaker 3/4 full with ice cubes. When it's chilled, strain into the highball glass and drizzle some of the blue Curacao liqueur over the top of it. Add a citrus twist and, bizarrely, an olive if you're a DNA purist. The answer is 42 and be sure to have your towel handy.

The (Full) Monty Python:

1 part Bourbon

1 part Vodka

Top up Lemonade

Directions: Mix the vodka and bourbon into the lemonade. Steer clear of Camelot: 'tis a silly place.

Captain Jack Sparrow:

1 1/2 oz Bacardi 151 rum

2 oz Captain Morgan Original spiced rum

2 oz Southern Comfort peach liqueur

9 oz pineapple juice

Directions: Empty a 16 ounce bottle and add 6 ice cubes to it. Add the Bacardi 151 rum, Captain Morgan Original spiced rum, Southern Comfort and pineapple juice. Leave enough room at the top for the foam when you shake it up. Shake until ice cubes are pretty much melted and serve. May be served on ice if desired. Savvy?

Moaning Myrtle:

2 ounces Champagne

1 ounce vodka

2 ounces white grape juice

Purple sugar

Optional: Dry Ice

Directions: Pour a small amount of grape juice onto a plate and a small amount of purple sugar on a different plate. Dip the rim of the glass in the juice and then in the sugar until the rim is coated. Add vodka, white grape juice, and ice to a martini shaker and shake until chilled. Pour into the martini glass and add the chilled champagne. For a ghostly effect, add a small piece of dry ice. Don't attempt a trip to Diagon Alley afterward.

Shire Flower:

3 ounces Purity Vodka

3/8 ounce elderflower liqueur

3/8 ounce lemon juice

1 bar spoon apricot preserves

Directions: Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake until ice cold. Double-strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with small, white flowers (optional). Possible side effect: adventures and mischief.

The Tribute:

1 oz. Alizé COCO

⅔ oz. Appleton Estate 21 YO Rum

1⅓ oz. pineapple juice

½ oz. lime juice

4 blackberries

Splash of simple syrup (1 part hot water, 1 part sugar)

Directions: Add all ingredients to a glass filled with ice and stir, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

The Deadpool:

1 can of Four Loco Uva Berry

1 can of Four Loco Orange Blend

1 can of Four Loco Cranberry Lemonade

1 can of Four Loco Blue Raspberry

Directions: combine all flavors and enjoy breaking the fourth wall.

Walking Dead:

2 oz Smirnoff vodka

2 oz Johnnie Walker Scotch whiskey

2 oz Jim Beam bourbon whiskey

2 oz Bailey's Irish cream

2 oz Midori melon liqueur

2 oz premium lager

2 oz Jagermeister herbal liqueur

2 oz absinthe herbal liqueur

2 oz Wild Turkey bourbon whiskey

Directions: Mix all ingredients into a large container. Once all mixed together, drink as fast as possible. Prepare for impending zombie apocalypse.

Beginner Cosplay tips

                

When you decide you want to Cosplay, DO YOUR RESEACH!  It will help you out a lot. Most people have already done the cosplay and will have many sites to buy certain items from or tips and tricks for making things look the way they are. Like My Kaylee  Cosplay, I needed to make it look dirty many people suggestion rolling around in  dirt or in the drive way where the oil is, but once I wash it the dirt will mostly go away, so someone suggested getting  cheap black nail polish and putting on some  latex gloves and  making it dirty that way. It works out great.

Anyways back to tips. If don’t know how to sew that is fine! My first Dalek was a non sew project I use thing were already pre-made and a hot glue gun. If you do need to sew I suggest two things take a sewing class at your local Hobby store or become friend with some who know how to sew.  Sewing does have its benefits things do tend to hold up better, but glue work fine too. 

Once you nail down what you want to Cosplay, I would write down the items that you will need and plan out your budget.  Cosplaying can get pricey, but you watch the sales or sign up for your local hobby store they send out50% off couples often. If you have a Hobby Lobby Each week you can get a 40% off on regular price item. Also go thrift store hunting, you can most likely find what you need at a thrift store and you are saving money.

Dalek Chick shared some of her favorite links last month. Now it's my turn:

Star Trek Actor Appearances: This blog primarily lists con appearances for various actors who have appeared on Star Trek. They also list appearances for: Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Firefly, Lost, Star Wars, and Stargate.

The Max Retropub: This is possibly the coolest bar in Tulsa, OK. It's 80's-themed, right down to the drinks, and it's full of old arcade games. It's located in the Blue Dome District downtown on S. Elgin. If you're ever in the neighborhood, that is definitely a place you'll wanna check out. They always announce events on their page, so be sure to "like" it for updates.

Cosmic City*: These guys are awesome. The idea for this company started in 2010 at a con in Tulsa, OK known as Trek Expo between two local guys, Aaron Bossig and Eddie Turner, and Garrett Wang (yes, that Garrett Wang). All of their prints are 100% original, especially the Trek Expo staple "Power of DeLancie" design.

Manu Intiraymi Official Fan Page: Early on in February, I had the pleasure of interviewing Manu. He's always interacting with his fans and posting crazy pictures (have you seen the blue hair yet?) and he's just an all-around good guy.

Garrett Wang Official Fan Page: And, of course, I can't post one without the other. Garrett has graciously accepted my challenge of an Uno war at Trek Expo in June, so I gotta give him props. He's got guts, but I'm afraid he'll have to experience losing to a girl, muahahaha!

Klingon Curses and Insults: I believe I originally came across this via Twitter, but it gives you 12 curses and insults and their [general] meanings. Study up!

Bad Translator: This site isn't necessarily geeky, but you can use it to translate some of your favorite Sci-fi quotes into blithering drivel, such as: "Admiral! There be whales here!" becomes "This area is the Admiral."

Big Bang Transcripts: This person...I admire this person SO much! They have transcribed every single episode up to the most recently aired. So you could literally get some friends together, pick a favorite and re-enact the whole thing, word-for-word. You could do the whole series if you wanted to. Or, you know, you could just use it to make sure you're quoting accurately.

The Zombie Factor: And last, but not least, for the zombie enthusiasts out there, Trek Radio's DJ Atomos shared this little gem with me: it's an indie zombie reality show. The potential for this is just amazing and I hope someone does have the brains (pun intended) to pick it up and give it a shot (pun not intended, but I'll take it).
