Summer Blockbusters

It's about that time of year again, and I've seen quite a few trailers for upcoming films that we should all be looking forward to. If you're needing a list of amazing movies to see this summer, IMDb has a list of upcoming releases you can look at. These are some of the films I'm particularly looking forward to seeing:

May 3: Iron Man 3

Robert Downey Jr. returns as "genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist" Tony Stark in the third installment of Iron Man. Stark's world comes crashing down at the hands of a new foe, the Mandarin [Sir Ben Kingsley], and he embarks on a mission to hunt down the Mandarin and put a stop to the destruction raining down around him and save the "one thing he can't live without": Pepper Potts [Gwyneth Paltrow].

May 17: Star Trek: Into Darkness

The second Trek film from director J.J. Abrams is now less than a month away and Trekkies/Trekkers across the globe are fidgeting in anticipation. After Alice Eve was revealed to be Dr. Carol Marcus, all of the speculation of "who's that" centered solely upon Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison. Rumors have run the gamut between  his being Khan to his being a Section 31 operative (in one trailer, it's mentioned that he's a rogue agent, but doesn't distinctly mention from where).

May 31: After Earth / Now You See Me

Starring Will and Jaden Smith, this post-apocalyptic flick is set 1,000 years after humanity has been forced to abandon Earth. After crash landing, the father-son duo must find a way to signal for help and to survive until they can be rescued.

Jesse Eisenberg teams up with fellow Zombieland survivor Woody Harrelson, along with Isla Fisher and Dave Franco, to pull off one of the greatest heists the world has seen using magic tricks and cunning to keep the FBI rethinking everything they think they know.

June 7: Much Ado About Nothing

Joss Whedon puts his own spin on the classic Shakespearean comedy (the movie is even filmed in Whedon's own home in Santa Monica). And, of course, no Whedon project is complete without a cast comprised of people from his past projects: Amy Acker, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion, Clark Gregg, Sean Maher, to name a few. Lately, anything Whedon has touched has turned into box office gold, and this should be no exception.

June 21: World War Z

Based on the novel by Max Brooks, humanity finds itself in a race against the clock to stop the zombie pandemic before all hope is completely wiped out. I highly recommend reading before watching because I know a lot of details will be changed/left out due to time constraints and creative license.

July 26: The Wolverine

Hugh Jackman reprises his role as Logan once more in this sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand [per director James Mangold]. Based on the comic book series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, Logan travels to modern-day Japan and battles an old foe while struggling with his own deep inner battles.

August 16: Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass and Hit Girl return for another round against the bad guys, most notably The Mother F-er [keeping it as family-friendly as possible here], formerly the Red Mist, and his band of baddies. Also joining the ranks of heroes: Jim Carrey as Col. Stars and Stripes.

Honorable Mention - August 23: The World's End

This Simon Pegg-Nick Frost team-up doesn't currently have a trailer out, though Pegg has been hinting at one coming soon via Twitter. Brief synopsis from IMDb: "Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival."

Other Pegg-Frost flicks to see if you haven't already: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Paul.
