How to make Hair bows / Bow Ties

Fellow Geeks!,

I recently made  some nerdy hair bows/Bow Ties  mainly for Star Trek Day! Many people have ask if I would sell them or how did I make them. Well, today is your lucky day,I will be showing you step by step on how to make them!

First Items you will need

  • 1/4 or scrap Fabric
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ruler
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Twist ties or ribbon
  • Hair tie or a clip

First step is to pick the best pattern for the bow, if isn't one pattern don't worried. You will cut out a piece that 12x5 and also a 1 1/2 x 6.  The first piece is your bow and the second piece is what will be the middle piece of your bow.

Once you have your two pieces cut, you will flip it over so the backside of the fabric is facing up. Now you will fold over about 1/4th if inch  to make a "fake seam" That you will iron down, this way the edges will not fray.

After you have iron down the sides you will fold one side to the middle point of the fabric  and then fold the other side just a little over the first fold. Then Iron all that together.

Set the piece to side so it can cool off, take the smaller piece of fabric that  you cut early and   fold over the side like you did early  and iron that down.

Now here come the trick part, to make it easier on you, take the bigger piece of fabric what we were working on early and fold it like a fan.  hold the middle of it and  fan out the edges.

Once you make you bow the you like it, take a piece of string or twist tie and tie it to the middle, basically  to hold it all together,

We are down to the final steps, take the other piece of fabric and wrapped it around the middle piece and glue it to it down, you can trim your piece down it make smooth.

Final step, glue on the hair slip or hair tie  to the back of your bow!

I hope all your fellow nerds out there enjoy  this!

I want to let everyone know this Tuesday at 6pm Est (5pm Cst)  on Trek Radio  Deyvid  will be playing highlights from Capt Shinypants and I  learning some Klingon., so please tune in!  If you have any question on how to make these bows please just email us!

Stay geeky
